SMS Technicians

Josh Roberts

I’m Josh Roberts, the owner and chief technician of Specialized Mechanical Services. I have more than 45 years of experience servicing and repairing large power boats, sail boats, and other complex equipment. I deal with all aspects of marine gasoline and diesel engines, electrical systems and hydraulic systems. Specialized Mechanical is based in Wilmington, NC, but I work on boats up and down the Atlantic coast and the Caribbean.

“You don’t have to call for nobody else.” – Lefty Tompkins

When you’re out at sea, that’s the last place you want a quick fix to fail. My first priority is to get the job done properly so you know you’ll be safe. When you choose Specialized Mechanical Services, you can be comfortable knowing that I will take care of your equipment as if it were my own.

“SMS keeps our equipment running and in a small business, that’s essential.”

Ask any of my clients and they’ll tell you I treat them the way I’d like to be treated—fairly, honestly and with integrity. I provide personalized service tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual client, whether here in Wilmington or hundreds of miles away.

“Specialized Mechanical is the only outfit I recommend to my buddies.”

We pride ourselves in earning the satisfaction and loyalty of our clients. Most of our work comes to us by way of word-of-mouth referrals, and that’s just the way we like it. Next time you need maintenance or repairs, give us a try and you’ll be referring us to your friends, too.

John Baxter

Captain Baxter joined SMS in September of 2010. Previously John had spent over nine years as a mechanic at Bennett Brothers Yachts. During his time there he performed all mechanical and elejohn Baxterctronic repairs to boats to 90’ and acquired a number of certifications, such as Wesmar Bow Thrusters and Stabilizers, Raymarine Electronics Installer, and Hamilton Jet Service. He is also Certified ABYC Electrical and a NEMA certified installer. Since he has been with SMS, he has become certified in Yanmar, Volvo Penta, and Westerbeke marine engines and generators.

Prior to moving to the USA in 2001, he skippered a number of power and sailboats from 55’ to 105’ in places like Mediterranean, South America, Caribbean, and the US. He probably would have stayed on the boats had he not met his wife, Amy, and decided to settle down in Wilmington, NC. They have two boys, William and Harrison and live just outside the city limits.

John brings a unique set of talents to our company. He has experience and expertise in all types of sailing vessels and complex systems on a mega yacht. He can climb a sailboat rig, repair it’s electronics, then perform a complete service on your engine. If you find that John has been assigned to solve problems on your boat, rest assured it will be repaired properly and in a timely manner. Working with yachts isn’t just a job for John, it’s a life passion and it’s reflected in his work ethic. We’re proud to have John on our team.

Justin Gainey

justin gaineyJustin is one of the two new hires in 2012. He started with us in March of 2012. He is a graduate of UNC-Wilmington in 2005 and has spent much of his time onboard offshore fishing boats around the coasts of North Carolina and Alaska. He has also performed finish carpentry and worked with industrial cleaning equipment. Justin made a decision to make yacht repair his career and was in the process of searching for a good company to begin his apprenticeship when he found us. We’re so pleased that he chose us over some other good service companies in this area.

Justin brings with him youthful energy and a positive attitude, which is needed as Josh and John are on either side of fifty! Not that John and Josh don’t have a positive attitude, the youth part is more difficult to muster! Justin and his wife, Lindsey, have one daughter and live in Wilmington.
